Breaking Into BB - What's next? (Analyst with 2 yrs of experience on the West Coast)
Hi everyone,
So I graduated from a Non-Target, mid-tier UC school and have been working at a local AM shop which focused in AM and structured products for the past 2 years.
Due to the size of the company I get decent exposures on securitization, valuation, and FP&A.
The work-life balance is perfect(9-6 mostly) but the pay is very basic(50-60k range + 5-15% bonus) as it was the only offer that I got upon graduation(started late, engineering, international student). I don't see a clear path for me to move up within the company but I will vest in a few months(about 10-20% of what I've earned in the past 2 years)
I've built a few connections and have been applying to multiple jobs at BB, AM and RA since last Dec but nothing really worked out so far. The city itself has basically no finance scene so there is rarely any chance for me to reach out and network. And that is also the main reason why I want to move as I want to break into BB eventually.
At this point, I have a few options:
1. Staying w/ the current company, vest in a few months, and start applying to MBA programs(2019)
I understand this is best step to rebrand & relocate myself but I'm a little worried that my work experiences and undergrad GPA may not qualify for a top program...I was in Computer Engineering and did a startup during half of my college life so I wasn't really focused on my grades...plus the school itself was an engineering school so there's hardly anyone who's trying a career in Finance

Same as above but applying to Top MSF/MIM programs(Sloan, Vandy, Duke...)
This is more of a temp fix just so that I can re-locate myself to cities with bigger finance scene or get on the list of the semi-target on-campus recruitments. MSF maybe helpful to me as I wasn't majored in Finance at all. But after reading a few posts and placements, I don't feel that MSFs/MiMs can provide any shortcuts to BBs at all. -
Network?Relocate to NY/SF first??
I honestly don't know if there's any other way I can improve my odds when applying to the positions directly. Relocation/Brand name seems to be the biggest problem for me.
I understand that I wasn't positioned very well when starting my career in Finance but would like catch up and try to break into BB as soon as I can. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
BJGinSC, shame nobody has responded. Maybe one of these topics will help:
If we're lucky, maybe these professional users will respond: Rahul-Thakur ryano137 FVC-DOR
Fingers crossed that one of those helps you.
