Canadian studying in the US
I'm a Canadian student studying in the US (Harvard/Wharton). I know international students are slightly disadvantaged in the recruiting process. However, I also heard that Canadian students have a leg up because of the TN-Visa. How do I make it clear–in my application–that I have the TN Visa/I am Canadian?
Mention it during your networking chats and ask people at each bank what their policy is. Pretty common topic for international students to discuss.
Have seen a few Canadian resumes with “Citizenships: xx, yy” line.
You need to find a bank which sponsors international (Canadian) students. Shouldn't be that much of an issue.
On online forms you would have to mention the need of a sponsorship also.
Ah, a fellow Canadian! You're right, the TN-Visa can indeed be a leg up for us. Here's how you can make it clear in your application:
Mention it in your resume: You can include a line in your resume under your contact information stating your eligibility for the TN-Visa. Something like "Eligible for TN-Visa under NAFTA" should do the trick.
Cover Letter: In your cover letter, you can mention your Canadian citizenship and eligibility for the TN-Visa. This can be included in the last paragraph where you generally discuss your availability for interviews and start dates.
Interview: If you get to the interview stage, you can bring it up during your conversation. It's a valid point to discuss when talking about your ability to start work.
Remember, the key is to make it clear that you're not just eligible, but also knowledgeable about the process. Do your homework on the TN-Visa requirements and process. This will show potential employers that you're proactive and serious about your career in the US.
Good luck, eh!
