Contemplating move abroad within 4-5 years, what steps to take?

Hi all,

A little bit of a different post than I would usually make, and crosses a couple of post categories but felt it was most fitting here; I'm currently living in the EU, and have worked in M&A for 4 years now. About 3 years at two BB's, after which I was sick of the culture (Covid tipped me over the edge), and now happily work at a more regional MM with great deal flow and culture.

I had some discussions lately with my gf, and it has been her dream to live abroad for a couple of years in the next 4-5 years (ideally Australia or NZ). While I am happy to do so and think it could be a great adventure, I am somewhat worried about her over-simplifying and romanticizing this, so I wanted to do some research. I feel like there are pretty much two paths to achieve this:

  •  Recruit internationally:
    • Feel like this might be very tough, especially for AUS/NZ which have pretty stringent immigration policies. Would love to get some input from locals or people who have made the switch;
    • Upside is that I don't have to move jobs right now, I can just postpone any decision until further notice
  • Do an internal move at a large international company/bank
    • Feel like this might be an easier route, but a bit tougher for me right now;
      • would have to recruit with quite the spotty resume due to me moving around a bit in my early career, as my current company does not offer international mobility opportunities (at least not this part of the world)
      • would then have to spend quite some time at said company before being able to move internationally, if they would allow it (guessing this would be easiest at big 4's, even though I would ideally not work at one)

I would love to hear from people who have made quite significant international moves liek this; how have you gone about it, how did you prepare your career for this (if you did), and whatever other relevant thought you might have.

Thanks in advance all!
