Developer working in "Finance" wishing to work in Finance

First time caller, long time listener. I'm a C# developer (Python too) who works at a big Bank in NYC. For the longest time I thought I worked in Finance until I realized - I fell into the IT Housekeeping role, working with the back office (Master Custody) doing shit that offers no challenge. My title is Software Developer but most of the work I do involves reporting and parsing XML files. My question How can I get closer to the business side of things without having experience working on a trading desk? Ideally I would prefer to be around Fixed-Income products (MBS in particular) doing research or running analysis on data models.

Hope this isn't too vague. Any insight/advice is appreciated.
