Doing IT at Banks

Is this a good idea for someone who wants to break into banking, trading, or anything front office? I don't know if I can break into banking given my nontarget background but I was thinking a backup plan will be to be do something backoffice like IT at a top BB, like GS or JPM or something. Do these banks allow internal mobility at all from IT?

I don't see a lot of top CS/ECE/tech schools send a lot of kids to IT in banks, is this because Google/Microsoft and others are much better choices than IT? Thanks for your help guys.

IT gets pidgeonholed even more than ops. At least some ops guys move over to trading desks but I've never seen IT move anywhere other than out of the bank or becoming IT associate or VP or something.

Well if you like just doing IT and are okay with it down the road, doing it at a BB is a solid job. High salary, interesting projects, etc - compared to IT at virtually most other companies. IT executives make good six figures and the CTO usually makes at least a million - less opportunities to make a ton of money compared to front-office roles but it is a good lifestyle.
