Entry Level Analyst

I graduated May 2008 from Arizona State University with a BS in Economics major GPA 3.2 cumulative GPA 3.0.

Since I graduated the area I worked in is financial sales. I worked as a stockbroker for an independent brokerage firm and now working at JP Morgan as a personal banker (position in a branch). I have my Series 7 and series 63. I do not like sales and is not the career path for me. I went into sales because I needed experience and at the time it was the only position that was hiring.

I am interested in an entry level analyst position. I currently live in NJ and looking for position in the city. I would greatly appreciate any career advice. Realistically where can I go from here. I do not want to go back to school until I have experience in an analytical role.

Thank You

With that kind of GPA, it's going to be difficult. You're a personal banker at JPM, look into their mentor program...find a mentor, and see if he/she can guide you somewhere within corporate banking

Your problem is that most IB, PE and AM firms do not hire laterals over from consumer banking, especially from PB, which I'm sorry to say is probably somewhat frowned upon. They are usually looking for college grads or people with industry experience. Your best bet would probably be finding a job as some sort of consulting analyst. Consider getting your CFA while you are at it.

Alternatively, and the path which i think is best for you - work hard as a PB, move up a few ranks, try to get to Branch Manager or even higher (my friend did this in 2 years), study hard and ace your GMATs. Go back to get an MBA and switch careers from there. Although a 3.0 is fairly low for the top tier b-schools, if you have good job progression and a high GMAT score (think 730+) then you still have a good shot.

I know it sucks to hear, but realistically, your options are limited.
