Etiquette question

Incoming FT analyst at boutique credit shop (not NY). A family friend (really just a business friend one of my Moms friends) is a journalist at a respectable business newspaper, not huge or anything, and basically she's doing a list of some respected leaders with 2-3 softball questions they answer via email. They want to interview the CEO. Does it hurt sending an email to ask if he's interested or would that come off badly. If it means anything everyone at the shop is really laid back, and I've had a couple good conversations with CEO during my internship. They do have a couple marketing people so I wouldn't want to step on their feet.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's generally advisable to be cautious when considering reaching out directly to high-level executives like a CEO, especially as an incoming analyst. Here are a few points to consider:

  1. Hierarchy and Protocol: Even in a laid-back work environment, there's typically a hierarchy and established protocols for communication. Directly emailing the CEO might bypass these protocols.

  2. Utilize Established Channels: Since the company has a marketing or communications team, it would be more appropriate to go through them. They are likely responsible for managing the CEO's external communications and public appearances.

  3. Leverage Internal Connections: Given that you've had positive interactions with the CEO during your internship, you might mention your connection to the family friend and the potential interview opportunity to your direct supervisor or mentor first. They can provide guidance on how to proceed or may facilitate the introduction themselves.

  4. Be Mindful of Perception: While your intentions are good, reaching out directly without going through the proper channels might be perceived as overstepping, especially for someone new to the organization.

In summary, it's best to respect the organizational structure and seek advice from your supervisor or the marketing team before proceeding with contacting the CEO directly. This approach not only shows professionalism but also respect for the established communication protocols within the company.
