Freshman at University of British Columbia

I am a Freshman at the business school in the University of British Columbia. I am very passionate about finance and I am looking to end up in portfolio management in the long run. I would love to know what this community thinks I should be doing as a first year, primarily to land an internship in a valuable area of finance this summer.

I want as much advice as you can give! I love learning new things about this industry and I want to be ahead in comparison with my freshman peers.

Ah, a young aspiring financier at the University of British Columbia, aiming for the stars in portfolio management! Here's a treasure trove of advice to help you outpace your peers and secure that golden internship:

  1. Networking: Start building your network early. Reach out to alumni from UBC, connect with professionals on LinkedIn, and attend finance-related events. Remember, persistence is key when emailing advisors and reaching out to firms.

  2. Knowledge and Skills: Dive into finance courses and read up on WSO guides. Understanding the basics of accounting and finance will give you an edge. Consider the WSO Networking Guide to refine your approach.

  3. Internship Opportunities: Look for internships in corporate finance at local firms or Fortune 400 to 500 companies. Use your personal connections, like family friends or your school's alumni, to find opportunities.

  4. Extracurricular Activities: Join finance clubs or societies at UBC to demonstrate your interest and commitment. Participate in case competitions or investment clubs if available.

  5. Freshman Programs: Explore freshmen/sophomore accelerator programs offered by banks. These can be a great way to get your foot in the door and get noticed by recruiters.

  6. Be Open: Don't be too picky with your first internship. Local boutiques and even unpaid internships can provide valuable experience. A family office or a small boutique firm could be a good start.

  7. Prepare for Interviews: Practice your pitch and be ready to discuss how your experiences and interests align with finance and portfolio management.

  8. Stay Informed: Keep up with financial news and trends. This will not only improve your market understanding but also give you great talking points in networking and interviews.

  9. Be Proactive: Regularly check your school's career portal, LinkedIn, and Indeed for finance-related internships.

  10. Be Realistic: It's your freshman year, so gaining any relevant experience is a win. Focus on learning and growing your understanding of the industry.

Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. Keep a positive attitude, be confident, and don't give up. Your enthusiasm and willingness to learn will shine through to potential employers. Now go swing from vine to vine in the financial jungle and show them what you've got!
