GMAT for recruiting...
I am a future mba who will be attending a top university next fall. My GMAT is 700 and I am considering retaking it as I feel having a higher score could give me an edge.
If it means the difference between Goldman/Morgan and a lesser shop, I have no problem doing it.
Any advice?
Thanks
If this is a serious post, I would say to focus your efforts on networking, punching up your resume, etc - retaking the GMAT to go from a 700 to a 720 or what have you is not going to impress GS enough to offer you a position. If you are attending a top school, use your network, and have strong interview skills you should not have a problem - focus on all of that, and not bumping your already strong GMAT score up another 20, 30, 40, etc points. Good luck and congratulations on your B school admission.
Hah,
Yes this is indeed a serious post. I have spoken with several current students at the school I am attending and some mentioned the banks did ask for GMAT scores, but did not seem to think it was a major factor.
I also met a member of the banking club who had a 770 and had it posted on his resume. At that point I just felt embarrassed about my score. Especially since I come from an 'Acme State University' with only a 3.5 GPA.
I inferred a bit further, thinking that the banks wanted it for a reason and the students may be kidding themselves. That said, I have no experience in the recruiting process and the only contacts I have in the industry are the students in the banking club and, now, yourself.
Basically I thought thought scoring 750+ would give me a little more edge.
Seeing as how associates have a harder time and given this article http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/content/oct2009/bs20091029_862211…
I think you should focus more on networking and less on your GMAT.
yes it would give you an 'edge' if you had 770 vs 700 on your resume
however, how much 'edge' and the opportunity cost is debatable
if you can take it tmr and score 770 then go ahead
however if you are going to spend a lot of time taking away from other things then it may not be worth it
