How valuable is work experience in China?

Hi WSO community,

I'm currently considering whether or not to accept a job opportunity in Beijing, China. I was reached out on LinkedIn for this role, and I do have the direct functional experience as well as the Chinese language skills they're looking for. Think it could be an incredible experience as I've spent a summer studying in Beijing, and quite enjoyed my experiences there as a tourist. The role is at a level higher than what I would otherwise would likely be able to land at a company in the U.S. or elsewhere.

My main concern is the current political climate, and the optics of me taking on a position at a Chinese company given the current state of U.S.-China relations. However, the product line I would be working on is a highly popular app used in the United States, so it's completely feasible that I would be able to spin my work experience in a positive light in terms of understanding the motivations and behaviors of U.S. consumers.

Another route I could go down is continue to work for companies based in China, but with highly international audiences. Ideally, I would be able to take this work experience and leverage it for an opportunity at a U.S. company in the future, but I'm concerned at the push-back that employers might have at work experience from a Chinese company (given the current state of media coverage painting Chinese companies as complicit in trade theft and copying Western companies).

Any thoughts/experiences people could share?
