Industrial Engineering Student to Investment Banking

I'm currently attending an average university as an engineering major. I was involved in one of our schools' investing clubs. However, I have grown an interest in going into Investment Banking immediately after college. I am going into my Sophomore year and looking to join my school's banking club with no prior experience. I don't plan on switching to Finance and/or Accounting as they make it very difficult at my school. Any tips for my path to IB?

I also started college as an IE major, luckily I got to switch to Business Analytics after first semester. Funny enough I still had to take a bunch of IE classes (stochastic modeling, systems, data mining, etc.)

I’d suggest you to look into S&T. You can flex the quant skills and people will treat you like a celebrity. You stand out from other applicants by not being the average, bland, vanilla “Finance and Econ” major with limited quant skills. S&T does tons of stock pitches too, whereas IB you’re not really pitching any stocks.

But if you really want IB - then join your school’s investment management fund, cover some names in a sector, and do all the 400 question M&I interview guide. Network a ton with junior bankers/alumni and have a good “Why IB” answer. You’ll get asked that question a lot more than your finance and econ friends ever will.

Best of luck

Engineer currently at an EB.  Took some business classes in school but not a ton.  As long as you have a good "why IB", people will be open to you recruiting, and in some cases you'll even have an advantage over business students
