Logical sequence of internships?

Hi guys. I'm a prefrosh at an HYP and I am lucky enough to have a paid internship (thanks to the wisdom on this forum) at a ~$4 bn AUM asset management firm this summer. If my goal is to get into a top IB program like PJT RSSG, Evercore M&A, GS TMT, etc., what is a logical progression of internships from here? I know that the top non-diversity students at top targets can get name-brand buy-side internships for sophomore summer, what should I try to do freshman summer to set myself up for that? I have several connections to GE and Discover and might be able to intern there, would doing FP&A or Corp Dev there freshman summer be good, or should I look for something more transactional? Thanks in advance.

First off congrats on the target! My advice is to take a fuckin breath my man. If you really want something go for a regional boutique IB shop, but no one cares about freshman year internships unless you’re aiming for a sophomore program, but even then the only thing that matters is junior year. You have time, breathe.

But also: connections are the most important thing. Get high ups to vouch for you when you change internships, and make connections to anyone and everyone. Also don’t limit yourself to the top groups and shops, if you go to either shop you’re honestly fine, but remember offer rates are extremely volatile, the game is to apply to as many as possible and think about what you actually want to do

Try for best brand name buyside you can next summer (doesn’t matter if HF/PE/AM, although MM and above PE would be best). If u can get Corp dev at discover that’d be great as well. Same thing for you sophomore summer. The progression doesn’t necessarily matter, just get good experience and study your technicals (esp RX is hard as fuck)

Thanks for the tips! For that kind of buy-side internship, can you apply through a regular resume drop? Or is it more informal because you're a first-year?

Think of it probabilistically. Cold applying as a freshman despite good exp and HYP for great internships is going to be tough. Not impossible, but for the better experiences you’re going to want to hustle. As with everything, Networking is going to be key. Don’t be entitled to anything, stay humble and you’ll find recruiting less stressful/more successful
