M&A advisory to IB?
I just graduated in 2023 from a top (semi-target) public school (Think Berkeley, Michigan, UCLA) with a 3.70 GPA in economics. I took a job at an M&A advisory firm (not an investment bank, more small-scale stuff with valuations of companies being about 1 million to 100 million) and want to get out. I didn't realize it before I accepted it but M&A advisory is more of a call center than it is financial analysis. I interviewed with investment banks during my senior year but did not receive an offer.
Is it worth me to stay with a no-name M&A advisory firm to try to get into IB? I also would love to do corporate finance but haven't had much luck, I have heard back from more IB places than F100 companies. Any tips on breaking into either industry? Preferably SF but I would move anywhere.
