Networking as a high school student (Stern)
I’m a senior in high school graduating in May and will be attending NYU Stern in the fall. I have dipped my feet in networking to source an internship for my junior year summer at a small firm but am not very experienced.
Should I be reaching out to current students at Stern to learn more about the school and position for placement into the main clubs (akpsi & FS) - or enjoy my last free summer with friends and wait to start connecting until I’m on campus?
Don’t want to seem like a massive hardo, but don’t want to be shooting myself in the foot by starting off at a disadvantage and would prefer to do work up front in regards to my network if that is advisable.
Would be great to hear from Sternies or others who have an opinion on this.
Best,
You could reach out to some students/bankers to learn about recruiting and the job here and there but enjoy your summer man... You got into NYU and are on the right track already so enjoy your time off
Dude, this has to be a joke.
I'm not sure if Stern is super hard or something, but as someone who went to a semi-target, networking even before you start college is insane.
My answer - no, save it for the first week or if you are more stressed, the summer before college. It's okay, take a deep breath, you are more than ahead of everyone your age, who probably don't know what EBITDA stands for.
I’d pick a different career path, you are just way too late to start networking now. Most kids start networking freshman year in high school nowadays.
Ok, I know this is supposed to be funny, and this might seem crazy, but hear me out.
I'm 16 right now, and I joke you not; I started connecting and asking for internships at 14.I plan on finishing 2 CFA levels before I graduate university while maintaining a 3.9 GPA. I started learning about stocks and actually invested in 2 global markets and crypto. I learned everything about financial statements (gotta maximize that shareholder value asap lmao) other than that, I managed real estate (everything from scanning for the right tenants, making sure all the paperwork is done, placing tenants in, receiving payments, and finally documenting everything in excel) besides my finance stuff I'm pretty good at school and have gotten top scores in standardized tests and STEM competitions (not my thing, but why not prove to myself that I can do better than the stem kids with huge egos if I wanted to).
After all this shit, you would probably imagine a shy nerd that studies all day long. yh you are wrong cause 1. I'm the laziest man on earth 2. I'm pretty extroverted, held conferences, and gave speeches with audiences reaching 1k. And before anyone tells me "kid have fun" I literally spend my time watching Netflix, playing videogames. Now for the second people who are gonna say oh that guy is not having a life again I played multiple sports volleyball, basketball, judo, table tennis, tennis, and padel.
And for the last type of people that are going to come and say, omg, another kid making a brag post, yh no, the thing I want say is that I've met not one, not two but a ton of other people my age who are better than me in all aspects I literally don't know what is up with my generation, but these kids are cracked, and the competition is crazy, like I don't come from a crazy rich family nor do my parents work in finance (eng and teacher). I'm very thankful and grateful for my parents and family for all the opportunities I had and for raising me to be a hard worker, but if I could do all this, imagine what a kid whose dad is a MD at GS or a partner at MCK will do lol.
Just wanted to rant hope you loved it.
Got aids from reading this
If you communicate or think like this fr you should work on that
I went to stern. My advice is wait until you are on campus and then try to meet/coffee chat people who are in the clubs with people you get along with (and have good placement). If you are normal and on your shit you should have no problem at all. If anyone from your high school or a mutual connection or something like that is at stern right now, you could reach out mid-to-late summer and ask them about clubs and stuff
Wtf
Find god
Wtf. In 10 years we are going to have kids ask "how to get into IB? Question from an elementary school student"
boomer MDs got into GS by handing their CV to the front desk no questions asked
