[Networking] What Level Has the Most Pull?

SPECIFIC TO JUNIOR YEAR INTERNSHIP (i.e., Summer Analyst):

Have heard many people say it's least efficient to network with high level MDs or Group Heads. What about first year Analysts? By the time recruiting kicks-off for junior-year internships, first year analysts are ~8-10 months [EBs] and 11-14 [BBs]. Can these analysts push resumes? What about more senior positions (ASO/VPs)? Any general rule of thumb as to where to target most energy? Do VPs typically just refer you down to AN/ASO since they're the most applicable (re: learning about experience).

Any tangential input is great. Don't feel the need to answer any or all Q's - they're just dialogue starters. Please don't be a smart-ass and say "everyone is beneficial to network with."

Bro if a MD or a Group Head refers you to HR you’re definitely getting a first round. Analyst referrals barely do anything besides just having HR glance your resumé. Seniority matters in networking!

Everyone is beneficial to network with.

Analysts are usually the most happy to help, and most are able to push your CVs or at the very least direct you to someone who can.

VPs and above is usually where decision-makers for hiring are, so it's the most productive to network with them in a sense. However, most won't be as willing to bother speaking with you if you are just doing cold outreach.

The best thing to do is to start reaching out to analysts / associates, and build a relationship there, before asking for referrals to either 1. push your CV directly if they can or 2. refer you to someone more senior (staffers usually) who make the final decisions on who to hire.

Agree, another reason I’ve found reaching out to analysts useful was helping gain a realistic understanding of the job and formulating an answer for the “Why IB? / Why this Bank?” questions that always show up in first rounds.
