Suggestions on converting internship to FT offer
Hi all,
I will be interning on a rates trading desk this summer in Singapore. My background is a little different: graduate student at one of the top quant programs, but I have actually tried to break into S&T since undergrad. My previous internship and academic experience is all in the US, so interning in Singapore is an entirely new experience for me.
What kind of technicals and how much is expected from an intern? In the past year I have studied many hardcore math/stats classes including ML and Stochastic Calculus, but on a sell-side rates trading desk, what should I know before being on the desk? I'm not entirely sure if these classes are helpful and I only take them because they are required for the whole class, since many are going to be quants. I have 3 weeks of quarantine in Singapore if that's relevant to what you may suggest I prep.
Also what kind of work culture should I expect from a Singapore office? I have friends who have interned in IB and they said the culture is very brutal and unforgiving, where sleeping 4hrs a night is the norm. The hours is probably better for S&T, but still, how tough is the culture?
Appreciate any inputs, especially from those who have been through the US -> Singapore transition.
