Take Wharton or reapply for HBS/GSB
No-name MM IB -> private/public investing at a SWF (solid gig that acts like a MF, good pedigrees), dinged at HBS / GSB (interviewed at one) and accepted to W. High GRE score and GPA from a T10 undergrad business program, non-minority. Team has historically placed & hired from HBS/GSB.
Curious to hear any opinions here as to whether I should take Wharton or reapply to HBS/GSB -- for context I've wanted to attend an MBA program for a long while, primarily for the network and career break aspect. I'm admittedly super insecure about the program here despite my rationale, and am basically surrounded by feedback from coworkers and former classmates who are in the H/S-or-bust camp. People at W seem great but the amount of chatter about being on HBS/GSB waitlists irked me at the admit day and it feels like I wouldn't be gaining much clout going there.
I get it, what matters to me is my experience and personal gain, this is an obnoxious take, etc. -- but am I crazy for thinking about shooting for the moon one more time at the risk of losing a chance at W? I have a few tangible ideas to improve my app (promotion + professor recs + going R1 this time around) but understand I might just be unqualified regardless. Should also mention that I'm currently sitting at 5 YOE so would be on the older end at 6 YOE if I reapply.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, the decision between accepting an offer from Wharton or reapplying to HBS/GSB is a significant one that hinges on several factors, including your career goals, the value you place on the MBA network, and your personal aspirations. Here are some considerations to help guide your decision:
Wharton's Value: Wharton is a top-tier MBA program with a strong network and excellent opportunities in finance, including private equity and venture capital. It's important to recognize the value and opportunities that come with being a Wharton graduate. The program is renowned for its finance and entrepreneurial education, which could be highly beneficial for your career in private/public investing.
Reapplying Risks: Reapplying to HBS/GSB comes with its own set of risks. There's no guarantee of acceptance in the next application cycle, and you might find yourself in a similar position a year from now but without the current offer from Wharton. Consider whether the potential benefits of getting into HBS/GSB outweigh the certainty of a spot at Wharton.
Career Impact: Reflect on how each program aligns with your long-term career goals. While HBS/GSB may have a certain prestige, Wharton also offers a robust network and resources for someone looking to break into high-level investing roles. The difference in outcomes might not be as significant as perceived, especially given your solid work experience and goals.
Age and Experience: At 6 years of work experience, you would indeed be on the older end of the spectrum for MBA candidates, but this is not necessarily a disadvantage. Your work experience can be a valuable asset in classroom discussions, networking, and recruiting. However, consider how delaying your MBA by another year fits into your personal and professional timeline.
Improving Your Application: If you decide to reapply, having a clear plan to enhance your application is crucial. The promotion, additional recommendations, and applying in Round 1 could strengthen your profile. However, ensure that these improvements align with the specific qualities HBS/GSB look for in candidates, such as leadership potential, impact, and a clear vision for your future.
In conclusion, while the allure of HBS/GSB is understandable, Wharton offers an exceptional opportunity that aligns well with your career aspirations in investing. It's essential to weigh the tangible benefits of attending Wharton against the uncertain outcome of reapplying to HBS/GSB. Reflect on what matters most to you in your MBA experience and career trajectory.
