My first post on the WSO. I'm in a position of choosing between my career options - to be a 'Techie' or a 'Management professional'. I live in Australia, have 13 years of work-ex (mostly in ERP consulting i.e. SAP) and have done several ERP implementation and transformation projects. Currently an aspiring Senior Manager in a Big4. However, I've realized the tech consulting job market in AU is pretty strong. Tech Consultants (mostly working as freelance contractors) have a lot of demand and get to earn much (much, much) higher bucks (daily or even hourly rates). Definitely more than Managers and Senior Managers in Big4, and sometimes even higher than Directors.
Of course they're contracting and hence have a higher job-loss risk than a perm employee. But with such high demand for SAP consultants in the market, they're often jumping from one role to another with less than a week's break. And earn that super high daily rate.
What should I do? I like being in Management roles, but I wouldn't mind tech roles too.
