What is my profile missing before recruiting?
Hey everyone -
I have had my foot on the petal for almost a year now, and am wondering how I can improve my profile before I start recruiting for BB, EB, Growth Equity, RE PE Roles.
I go to NYU and am a finance major with an intended minor in data science with a 3.8 GPA (no finance coursework so far).
I am a part of 3 of the most competitive clubs on campus as well as other extracurriculars like student government.
I interned at a top research university (Stanford, Johns Hopkins, etc.) last summer working with their healthcare finance team (operations etc).
Starting from November of last year, I started interning at a very very good MM Real Estate PE firm doing deal sourcing, capital raising, market research, and other tasks.
As well as interning at a MM investment bank working on deal sourcing.
I have been on my A game with networking, sending out lots of quality emails (how many contacts/ strong relationships should I have at each office that I am targeting?
What should I be doing now? and this summer? Thanks!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it sounds like you're already on a strong path with a solid GPA from a reputable school, involvement in competitive clubs, and relevant internships. Here are some suggestions to further bolster your profile:
Finance Coursework: Since you mentioned not having taken finance coursework yet, consider enrolling in relevant finance classes to build a theoretical foundation that complements your practical experience.
Technical Skills: Ensure you have strong financial modeling and valuation skills. WSO offers courses that can help you with this, such as the Excel Modeling Course and the Financial Modeling Mastery.
Networking: Continue your networking efforts. Aim to have multiple contacts at each firm you're interested in, ideally at least one strong relationship where someone would be willing to vouch for you.
Summer Experience: For the upcoming summer, try to secure an internship that aligns closely with the field you're most interested in, whether that's BB, EB, Growth Equity, or RE PE. This will give you direct experience and a talking point during interviews.
Research and Prepare: Research the firms you're interested in thoroughly and prepare for interviews by practicing common questions and case studies. WSO's Interview Prep Pack can be a valuable resource.
Industry Knowledge: Stay updated on industry trends and news, especially in the sectors you're interested in. This will help you during networking and interviews to come across as informed and passionate.
Mentorship: Seek out mentors who can provide guidance and potentially advocate for you during the recruiting process.
Remember, it's not just about the quantity of networking contacts but the quality of those relationships. Keep up the momentum, and good luck with your recruiting efforts!
