Where do I go from here?
Background: I'm a 25 y/o male who worked industrial construction for the past 6 years and even ran a few smaller job sites where I have around 1.5 mil in work completed under my purview. Before then, I dropped out of a small non-target school after a year. Almost a year ago in august there was a construction sales job I came very close to getting but did not get. However the thought of working on the business side of things pushed me into sucking it up and going back to school to get a business degree. I have some friends in MM IB and LMM PE and learning more about their day to day outside of the money, made me want to pursue a career in finance. Considering it was august when I made the decision, didn't have a strong academic past, and not much money to fund myself I just went to the local community college.
Today: I finished my second semester and have a 3.8 at a community college and have been self-teaching financial modeling and other finance related skills. I'll be applying to transfer to two target schools for the spring '24 semester with some non-targets as safety options.
I got into a local bank "scholar" program where I've worked as a teller during the semester, and soon over summer I'll be either in the treasury department researching MBS investments, equity investments for wealth management or I'll be in the Business credit department.
The problem: I'm not sure what to do next to break into investment banking.
I've been working to be sure I'm the best possible student and employee not only in my program but across the board. I'm not in an environment where high paying finance careers outside of wealth management are even known about. Networking is tough being in upstate New York and trying to find people on linkedin to cold email with similar backgrounds or any remote connection is tough. I do have a solid connection at a regional bank that has a DCM and M&A group but that's about it for a network outside of a few friends. I am well aware I have an uphill climb and am ready to do whatever's asked of me but often I find myself feeling lost and confused with no clear path
Is there anyone who's been in similar shoes or any general advice?
