Houston Summer Intern Housing

As the title says, I have landed a trading internship in Houston for this summer (2015). I am not from the area, and I am wondering if any users here have experience finding temporary summer housing in the city? I will be living with a roommate who is working downtown and my employer is near the Galleria area, so somewhere easily commutable to these areas is preferred.

I am fairly new here, so I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this topic.

 

Anywhere "inside the loop" (between west 610 to 45) and you will both be fine for your commute. There are often lots of townhomes for rent that might do short term. Some apartment complexes also do 3 month terms. East downtown (east of 45) is usually a little cheaper.

As someone who has been living in Houston for 4 years, I would only recommend the midtown area if you plan to live alone, since there is a decent amount of foot traffic on weekends and evenings to neighboring bars and restaurants. Take a look at the heights area, there are a lot of good places to live for relatively cheap. Also, the galleria area is also growing in popularity, and offers a few quick ways to get downtown despite the distance. Also, the rice university area houses a lot of college students who frequent the bars and restaurants in the village.

 

Google "Houston HAR" Houston's MLS for apartments in your criteria. You'll want to stay inside the loop and out of the burbs as 1) they are boring (2) traffic is terrible.

I recently accepted an offer for SA in Houston and I'm trying to get ideas for housing options. I have looked at corporate housing, which seems to be at about $70/night and watched craigslist but haven't seen much there for much less. Is it standard to spend $2,000/month on rent down there during your SA or are there other options that I'm not seeing? Any info is greatly appreciated.

You should find something for MUCH cheaper than that. My freaking mortgage, in Houston, is cheaper than that. FYI, I live in a newly constructed 2300 sq. ft. house.

some are 6 or 12 months but most are private.. i would just call and ask.. worse case they say no.... all in all it may be the same price but a little more private.... they wanted 1200 for my place but i got them to agree to two year lease at 1050

Ya I have been sending out some emails to the ones that are furnished. Most are only a few miles from the office I'll be at, so I'm hoping traffic won't be too much of an issue from that distance.

 

If you can live close to the Metro-rail, I would do it. You can live for under $1000 in a very nice place, and $700 isn't unreasonable in Houston. Also, if you're near the Metro, your commute Downtown can be 25 minutes or less depending on where you are.

Seriously? Damn. I have been riding the rail for two years on a regular basis (5+ times a week) and often wearing a suit, and nothing's ever happened. I have ridden it to sketchy locations at sketchy times (the Fiesta at the Wheeler stop, next to the NAACP) and although there are some creepy-ass people who just randomly stare into space and talk to themselves, I feel safe riding it.

Maybe it's because I carry very little cash on me and keep a 6-inch blade ready to go in my pocket...

I agree with your general assessments about Houston rents Beef, but we're talking about somewhere that accepts very short term lease, with furniture, bills, maid, etc. With a roommate in a reasonable 2bdr you can pay less than a $1000 but most are going to be more than that.

You have a point about the short-term lease, that does make it tougher. But if you can find a college student who is leaving Houston for the summer but who has a long-term lease, he/she may be willing to sublet for you. That's what I did in NY a couple years ago. Granted it's not as easy to find legitimate deals through Craigslist in Houston, but it should be possible.

I'm not sure if Rice University accepts non-Rice students for their on-campus summer housing, but it's worth looking into. I know TFA has a training camp at Rice and a lot of the TFA recruits stay there. The Rice rate is around $600 a month for a room in the summer, from what a friend tells me. It's also right next to two Rail stops (that's a plus for me, for others not so much evidently...). I'm thinking of living at Rice for the summer if I can get a spot, but I may end up having to find someone to sublet with.

I lived in The Ventana in Midtown for a SA gig...but it's not actually in Midtown. It's closer to the Medical Center and surrounded by-4-5 homeless shelters. You can guess how often I got asked for change. Only plus was I was a couple blocks from the Metro and rode it downtown every morning and walked to the BoA tower, saved me like $150/month on parking. Oh, and the leasing agents were really hot.

The Post Rice lofts are good in downtown if you want to live there, but Midtown is where everyone goes out, at least when I was there 2 years ago. A lot of my friends who are FT in Houston live at Gables Upper Kirby, lots of energy banking guys there. Good location and prices aren't bad. Get ready to go to Vintage often.

 

The Ventana...ha, know some guys who lived there during our summer internship. The two of them split a huge apartment for a great price but I don't think it was furnished. Convenient to downtown and midtown but it's in a pretty sketchy area...

I lived with a fellow summer analyst out by the Galleria. We paid about 1300 a person per month for a 3 month lease from a corporate apartment company that we found on our own. 2br 2 bath; the place was decent, in a good area and fully furnished. Need a car to live out there though.

will you be working in downtown? galleria? greenway? i think a decent 1bdrm can be found for 1400/m in all those areas... maybe even less.

For 1400 a month, unless you go live in River Oaks, you will live like a king in Houston. Friend of mine pays ~1200 out by the Galleria and his place is NICE - gated apartment complex with pool, gym, everything looks high-class... it looks like the type of place that would cost at least 4000 a month in Manhattan.

Once again, live in places like Camden Midtown, Camden Travis Street, Metro Midtown and you will pay less than $800 or so and be really close to the office...
