Finance Vs Econ Major
Hello all, I’m a upcoming university student and I’m trying to pick out which major would fit me best. I have a interest in Econ but I’m planning to go into either IB or consulting (currently leaning more towards consulting). Would finance be a better option because of the fields I’m interested in? And what is better about each major?
Econ. Much better degree. Can learn finance on the side.
Finance major is probably more useful.
Assuming you are from the EU, Econ would be the best option, else, if you go to a Target or Semi in the United States, finance is the best. If you go to any other school in the top 20, 50, 100, etc. , then major in Econ.
I was a dual major. Econ seemed more rigorous and math focused. Students expected to have their thinking challenged. Finance I learned how to use the BAII plus and listen to entitled b school kids complain about discounting cash flows.
If I could do it again. Econ, no doubt
Second this. Double major/duel degree. Econ is much more rigorous, math-focused, and intellectually challenging assuming your are doing a science degree whereas finance is plugging and chugging numbers on calculator/excel. If you want to do IB, maybe go with finance bc it is more relevant to the job, at least in IB, you’re not using lagrangian method to derive demand curve, but you will discount cash flows and calculate wacc.
Duel degree?
I earned a BA in Econ. I learned everything I needed to know about finance on the job. You can learn all the basic accounting knowledge on your own too.
