How do you ask for the financial statements of a private company?

I work for a small firm in Europe (about 30-40 full time employees). I have been recently curious about asking to see the financial statements because I took a class on financial markets. I was wondering if any of you have experience asking your CEO or someone in the company for these documents? I just want to make sure that the company is healthy and has sufficient liquidity right now. I appreciate any advise on how to approach this, without being .. weird or indiscreet. Thanks!

Edit: I'm a marketing coordinator and can talk quite nicely with the CEO. I would simply like to know if you have ever done something like this and if they took it in a bad way
