Any advice for incoming HS freshman wanting to go into IB/PE after schooling.
I'm starting HS next year (private and all boys school). I am confident I want to go into IB or PE after schooling. Any advice on how to get ahead (possibly network), classes I should take (APs), or just any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. I know it is really early, I'm not even legally allowed to work yet. But anything to get a little bit ahead would be appreciated. Thank you so much.
Dude you’re 12 go outside
If you aren't there already, get into Exeter/Andover/Brunswick/Eton/Deerfield, then join the top finance clubs at HYPSM. At this point, leverage your network to get into GS TMT/MS M&A/CVP/PJT RSSG and ultimately recruit on-cycle into BX/KKR/Apollo. At this point the choice is yours, frankly. You could either choose to stay (or get and MBA at HBS or GSB) and become a killer at your firm, or eventually join your favorite SM, MM, or activist. Whatever suits your taste at that point.
Thank you so much for your advice, it is really helpful.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategic steps you can take as a high school freshman aiming for a future in Investment Banking (IB) or Private Equity (PE):
Focus on Academic Excellence: Ensure you maintain a high GPA. Consider taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses, especially in subjects like Economics, Calculus, and Statistics, which are relevant to finance.
Extracurricular Involvement: Join or start clubs related to business or economics. This could include a finance club, debate team, or even starting a small business or investment club. These activities demonstrate leadership and a genuine interest in the field.
Networking: While formal networking might be challenging at your age, you can start building relationships with teachers and older students who share your interests. Attend guest lectures or local business events if possible.
Summer Programs: Look for summer programs focused on business, finance, or leadership. These can provide valuable learning experiences and enhance your college applications.
Read and Stay Informed: Start reading financial news and books related to economics and finance. Understanding current market trends and financial principles will give you a solid foundation.
Plan for College: Research universities with strong finance or economics programs. Understand what these colleges look for in applicants and tailor your high school experience to meet these criteria.
Remember, it's great to have a clear goal, but also ensure you explore a broad range of interests during high school. This not only makes you a well-rounded individual but also helps in confirming your passion for finance.
