college intern/job offer from megafund, no connections

Is this possible? I heard some Wharton sophomore (chinese guy, M&T) did an internship with TPG. How can a college students get into a megafund that doesn't traditionally recruit undergrads without personal connections?

You said "you heard", so how do you know he has no connections whatsoever?

Also, what does being a Chinese guy have to do with anything lol.

CharmWithSubstance:
Being a chinese guy means 90% chance he had connections.

What...? Not sure how many Chinese people you see as senior partners at PE shops or senior MD's at banks but I sure don't see many. Unless this was for TPG Asia...
