Do I need an MBA based on my background?
All,
I have been struggling through the GMATs and have one more test in me before I throw in the towel. I am taking the GMAT to have options. I am not sure whether I want to go to business school or not, as my primary goal is to get into VC. That said, based on my background, should I pursue an mba?
I have over 5 years of management consulting (corporate strategy) experience in the public and private sector at the manager level, BBA in Computer Information Systems, and an MA in Government focusing in Homeland Security. I have a few contacts that I am trying to leverage to get into Venture Capital, but I am told to wait as most firms are not hiring at this time.
Once the market rebounds, I imagine employment opportunities will open up, but I wonder if I have a background that venture capital firms would be interested in. My target industry is high tech potential in the Washington DC area.
Thoughts?
Unrelated to your MBA question, have you looked at Paladin Capital Group in the DC area ?
Yes, I am very interested in Paladin and have been keeping my eyes on that company for quite some time now. Unfortunately, I am in the waiting game, waiting for the economy to rebound and for them to start hiring again.
In the meantime, I have bought some books and plan to educate myself as much as I can. If you have any other suggestions on how to better prepare myself it would greatly be appreciated.
I think your background is pretty good. It can be boosted by a top MBA program. If previous topic in this forum is accurately described and understood by me, your chance is pretty good.
Ideally, I would like to try to get into VC without going into the MBA debt and forgoing my salary, but based on previous posts, it sounds like most resources are expected to get an MBA at some point. Do you agree with this observation?
I am considering Georgetown based on my current residence in Washington DC, the schools strong brand, positive presence of VC firms in DC, and the institutions focus on finance. Hopefully, I can get my GMAT up high enough that I am in the 80% range GMAT range.
