Employment gap
Hey guys,
Just wanted to hear your thoughts on the best ways to address an employment gap of over a year. I’ve been moving from the US to my home country to Canada and I got stuck because of covid. It’s been pretty tough to get interviews.
Thanks.
Just say Covid. Valid excuse for everyone.
I agree with the above comment. You can also try enrolling into a high quality and well-recognized online professional course, like an advanced accounting, finance or negotiations to dress up your gap.
Employers will understand your situation, I had been unemployed for many months too and it wasn't a disadvantage at all for recruiting. Been asked about the gap during interviews though, but they didn't give it much importance as it is clear that it was COVID-related.
Maybe you could volunteer at an animal shelter or do anything similar that doesn't pose risks. Meanwhile take the ocassion to prepare for potential interviews, maintain a work schedule for recruiting and enjoy some Canadian fresh air during the rest of the day. Best of luck!
I'm in a similar position and usually, my answers addressing the gap is recharging with family / taking RE courses or certificates / networking / read news etc. However, I recently had a few conversations with the headhunter and what they told me is some employers DO care about the gap. If the gap over 1 year shows on your resume, they won't even talk to you. I hope it's not the case entirely but if headhunters say so, there's a sense behind it. I was told the reason why is employers would think you would be able to leave the company anytime you want.
