Got a message about a job for a portfolio company but would rather work at PE. How to respond?

Hi all,

Background - Canadian currently working in M&A at a big 4 with about a year and a half experience. My end goal is PE. I graduated from one of the bigger business schools in Canada. I got a message on Linked in from a PE firm recruiter asking if i would be interested in applying for a finance position at one of their portfolio companies. I noticed they are doing their round of associate hiring in the next couple of months. Wondering how best i should thank her for the opportunity to apply for a portfolio company but would be more interested in an associate position at the PE itself. Think its possible or a long shot - given if she thought i had the experience for an associate position she would have messaged about that rather than the portfolio co. Should i try to get a phone call out of it? I have presented deals to the firm and have a contact within it.

Thoughts?
