how can you tell whether a mid-market PE shop is "good"?

Hi all -- I was wondering how potential employees assess the quality of a mid-market shop. I feel like there's a small group of mega firms, but a whole lot of mid-market PE shops with no authoritative set of rankings. What type of characteristics might you look for when comparing one mid-market shop to another, and how do you measure the prestige of these firms? Does prestige of the firm really matter in PE as much as it does in banking?
