How long to aim for a top PE role

Came up short on a few PE processes with top 10 players last year.Market hasn't been kind since (almost all roles this year are only hiring females). At what point do I concede that I won't end up at a top PE player and start to aim for a mid market PE fund or an infra fund.Currently in my 4th year in BB IB in power / utilities / infra coverage.

Hey I hope you are well. Fwiw I have seen people move from Mm PE or even infra PE potentially to the MF PE / publicly traded PE firms. Especially when the market gets hot (now may be one of the biggest lulls in PE since the 08 area since interest rates have more or less been 0 since then except for a bit before covid or whatever), I have seen the mega fund firms try to recruit laterally from Mm or other firms.

Just also on the idea that now may be a tough time in PE, I think I saw a video from this years Milken conference where Jon Sokoloff (founder / managing partner of Leonard Green - whose most recent PE fund may have been $10bn), in which he said that their firm hasn’t made a single investment in the last year because of the recent market changes

either way best wishes and good luck 👍🏼
