Yes — although the people who do well love it. You buy businesses and then you think about having right management in place, M&A, and exit strategy.
All of finance is relatively boring in terms of the day to day tasks. There are some cool elements to PE at a high level (putting in place your vision for where to take a business, thinking through potential M&A from a strategic lens, etc.), but it’s not like the necessary work streams are exciting

Some people love it, other kind of like it (enough to do the job), and some hate it.

For the most part, you are correct
LMM PE at senior level is basically a simulation game IRL. Super interesting, you have a real impact on the strategy of the companies you are invested in and get to meet passionate people. Depends on the fund obviously as some are completely hands-off. Have to love networking and sourcing deals however which is not everyone's cup of tea.
Interesting at junior level but I would rather go to IB to benefit from structured formation and gain experience
