LP to GP
Title says it all.
How usual / possible is it to move at Associate / VP level from an LP (say a Canadian Pension Fund or SWF) to a GP (MF / MM Buyout Fund)? Looking at the long-term compensation gap, this seems like a choice to consider.

bump..
also interest in the opposite middle market GP to large LPs at VP level
It’s possible at the Associate level depending on the amount of direct/co-invest diligence and financial modeling you get exposure to, but I’ve only ever seen this transition to LMM and MM funds as the move to a MF is essentially impossible. I’ve never seen a VP at an LP move to a GP because at that point the roles are completely different from my understanding. There’s plenty of threads on this move on the forum so I suggest doing a search.
Thanks, this makes a lot of sense.
Do you personally think that this transition is something that would work well through a MBA?
I've been considering doing an MBA to i) move to another geography, ii) build networks and iv) career re-steering (sector / GP).
I think that my current firm pays quite well vs. other LP peers, but the performance incentive scheme we have is nowhere comparable to carry as you can expect. I just want to consider all career options at this point (I'm nearing my 2-year tenure) before it gets too late, unless it is already.
