Moving to US growth equity funds with a background in PE in Brazil
I'm a Brazilian in the middle 20's, with 2 years of experience in VC (intern) and 3 years in PE (intern, analyst and associate) in 2nd tier firms
I'm willing to make a lateral move to a growth equity-focused US firm, such as GA, Thoma Bravo, TA Associates, Riverwood, etc
As it doesn't seems to be a frequent move (almost no benchmarks), what do you think should be my next steps?
- Good to go
- MBA
- Try to enter in a global firm, with office in Brazil
- Other
Thanks!
First things first, do you have any offers?
Not yet
Internal transfer or MBA (but only at the top programs) are going to be your most likely routes to success. Also, you need to ensure your English skills are extremely good otherwise you may struggle with certain aspects of the job or even to pass interviews. I’m personally extremely sympathetic to non-native English speakers as I’m learning a couple of languages myself, but US PE employers are far less sympathetic and misunderstandings can make diligence discussions a nightmare.
Tbh, unless you worked at Patria, PE in Brazil isn't thought of so fondly in North America.
Interesting. Do you have any particular view on how is Pátria seen abroad?
