On-Cycle Model Tests

Ignore title - incoming IB analyst.

For on-cycle model tests (assuming not a take-home, etc.) - are you expected to only use native Excel hotkeys/shortcuts for the model test? Would you most likely be given an Excel with Factset/Macabacus already downloaded, so you can use hotkeys for formatting/styling? Do firms care about formatting/styling (provided you reach IRR & MOIC) given the time crunch?

Ultimately, trying to decide whether it's worthwhile to practice for on-cycle modeling tests with native Excel shortcuts/hotkeys or use Factset/Macabacus.

Thanks

For on-cycle modeling tests, especially in the high-pressure environment of private equity recruiting, mastering Excel shortcuts and hotkeys can significantly enhance your efficiency and performance. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Native Excel Shortcuts/Hotkeys: It's crucial to be proficient with native Excel shortcuts. These are universally applicable and will be your best ally in any modeling test scenario. Given the uncertainty of the specific setup you'll encounter, relying on native shortcuts ensures you're prepared for any situation.

  2. FactSet/Macabacus Availability: While some firms might provide an Excel environment equipped with FactSet, Macabacus, or other Excel plugins, you cannot bank on this. It's a safer bet to prepare assuming you'll only have access to native Excel functionalities. If you do end up in a test environment with these tools, consider it a bonus, but your core skills should not depend on their availability.

  3. Importance of Formatting/Styling: Even under time constraints, the presentation of your model matters. Firms do pay attention to formatting and styling as it reflects your attention to detail and professionalism. However, the accuracy of your calculations, especially achieving the correct Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Multiple on Invested Capital (MOIC), is paramount. Ensure your model is clean, organized, and easy to follow, but prioritize the correctness of your financial analysis.

  4. Practice Strategy: Given the above points, it's advisable to practice with native Excel shortcuts/hotkeys. This will prepare you for the most likely scenario and ensure you're not at a disadvantage if external tools are not available. Additionally, familiarize yourself with basic formatting and styling practices that can be quickly applied to make your model presentable without consuming too much time.

In summary, focus on honing your skills with native Excel functionalities and ensure you can efficiently produce accurate and clean financial models under pressure. This preparation strategy will serve you well in on-cycle modeling tests.

Depends on the firm most have gone to making you take it over zoom in which case you can use any hotkeys/shortcuts.

A few firms still put a crappy laptop in front of you at your superday and make you do one with just bare bones… cough cough Audax

Got it. This is super helpful.

By zoom, I'm assuming the interviewer is watching you while you model, is that correct? It makes sense, but also seems like a gigantic waste of time for the interview to watch multiple candidates model away from 1 to 3hrs a pop.

Also, are you aware of other firms that go on-cycle that give you a shitty laptop with native excel like Audax?

Thanks!

I took 3 modeling tests given I recruited off-cycle - all for UMM / MFs. None were  proctored
