PE Analyst On-Cycle Advise
Hey all,
Currently a first year analyst (just started training) at a MM PE firm in NYC (fund size 2B-4B). Non target UG w summer internship at GS/MS with no return. I recruited on cycle with absolutely no invites, I want to move up market in my firms industry coverage am i screwed? or will I have better luck in off cycle. Kind of spiraling right now and appreciate any advice, thank you

What do you mean by recruited with no invites? Did you speak to headhunters? If so, it may be because they are targeting candidates at top banking groups at the moment.
If you haven’t spoken to them, then you can definitely reach out to them through email to express interest. Make sure you’re prepped though. It’s a shitty process, but good luck!

The only firms that have interviewed are MFs. You aren’t going to get invited to an MF process from an MM.
how about UMM
Def possible, to do an UMM, if your MM is on the larger side > $3bn
Might be helpful to provide my insights. This is from a couple of classes ago, but imagine this holds (if not more relevant given abridged timelines).
Coming from a MM PE background makes it pretty difficult (but not impossible) to go Oncycle. For the MFs, they prioritize top banking groups and laterals from other MFs (when looking at PE Analysts). They also go Oncycle which makes it quite difficult to standout if you’re not given the opportunity to attend a superday. Sometimes you can network into a process, but this generally doesn’t happen given how structured they are.
In my experience, the opportunities for MM PE Analysts are in UMM processes where your skillset as an investor is more easily teased out as they can be less rigid in their approach. This is especially true in offcycle processes where they have a chance to get to know you a bit better and tease out how you think on a more current basis versus where they expect you to be having gone through a group like MS M&A etc.
After missing in Oncycle, I focused on just building reps and being highly thoughtful about talking about my deals as well as networking. This paid off for me as I moved upmarket. It’s hard, but not impossible.
Hard & smart work pays off if you’re willing to be a bit patient (albeit hard given peer pressure rn). However, you’ll be able to hopefully find the best fit and vice versa in more drawn out processes. Best of luck!
