Portfolio Company Operations
Does anybody know if there is such a thing as an "operating analyst/associate" at any PE firms?
I'm thinking along the lines of "operating partners" (the ex-CEO's & industry types) but at the junior level.

Career Resources
They exist but are very rare. I've never seen an analyst level position, but a few firms with strong ops groups will hire associates to help manage projects. If the operating partners know what they're doing, you would get a great experience out of it. Its a great gig if you can get it but, like I said... very rare. You might get a similar experience with lower pay at a rotation program within a large, multi-industry conglomerate (like GE).
Some of the biggest funds have in-house consulting arms. KKR's is called Capstone. A number of energy-focused funds have "asset-management" groups (asset management in the energy sense of managing/operating the company's plants). I've seen a growth equity fund or two as well, again usually for ones that have a pretty specific focus, otherwise it's tough to ensure that your expensive non-deal partners can be worthwhile.
I've never seen someone with a purely banking background working solely on operational improvement - why would they be able to add any value?
What is reasonably common is ex-Deloitte auditor types working with the companies to improve financial reporting / governance, although this is more common is Emerging Market and smaller MM funds.
gores group has an operations team and an investment team. operations team takes junior guys from mostly consulting backgrounds and investment team takes mostly junior guys from ibanking backgrounds.
im assuming platinum may have a similar approach.
bain cap has an operations group
We have Portfolio Anslysts but they are all ex Auditors/Transaction Services/Management Consultants -> MBA types. I can say for certain that they have a really fascinating job and are constantly developing some envious skills.
Portfolio Analyst at a PE Fund = PE ops? (Originally Posted: 10/23/2010)
Looking into positions, was offered a "Portfolio Analyst" role at a PE fund. I've been told by a few friends that a Portfolio Analyst is basically what they call Ops at PE funds. Wondering if this is true. The responsibilities sounded Ops like on the Job description (perform fund rollups, investor relations, adhoc duties and interact with acquisitions and Asset Management, but the partners assure me they're not, seems like the normal talk of 1/2 your time here, 1/2 your time on front office stuff.
Just wondering if what im hearing is true universally or if im over thinking this.
If it's a small fund, the roles could start to blend because they want to get the most out of junior resources. A good check is if there are other junior analysts/associates officially classified on the investment team. If so, your role is probably back office and they will take care of the deals.
I believe there are, they were hiring for a portfolio analyst and an Acquisitions analyst. They've been claiming that they're one in the same, but the job descriptions from my point of view are very far from similar. One states clearly, financial modeling, underwriting and due diligence. While the other talks of adhoc responsibilities and fund roll ups.
Im just slightly confused as all the partners i talk with continually say they're similar, when they dont seem so at all. Im really just wondering if Port analyst is just a new term for Ops
