UMM/MF Firms at VP+ level
Hi,
Keen to hear people's takes on which UMMs / MFs they perceive as most attractive from a long-term career perspective (VP and above) instead of the typical discussion that revolves around analyst / associate roles.
Beyond the typical culture / investment focus / "prestige", what aspects do you guys consider? Few things I had in mind:
- AuM per senior (i.e. principal / partner / MD)
- Access to carry / upside (who owns the economics, e.g. public vs. private, concentrated to few individuals vs. spread out)
- Track-record and sustainability of returns
- Likelihood of making partner (once already at VP level)
Keen to hear perspectives on this - how'd you rank Advent / Permira / Apax / EQT / Hg / Ardian / BX PE / KKR / Carlyle / Silver Lake / H&F / Warburg ... from VP+ perspective? Further, how'd you think about i) "emerging" firms (e.g. Vitruvian, Astorg) vs. the more established MFs and ii) "non-core" strategies (e.g. CVC strategic opportunities, BX tac ops) vs. the "plain vanilla" buyout?
From a European perspective, it feels like within the MF / UMM space Silver Lake, H&F and maybe Warburg stack up very favorably vs. the European peers who tend to have materially lower AuM per senior. CVC is maybe bit of an outlier given the deal-by-deal carry.
Bump - interested as well
