Question is: Is it possible?
Assuming two scenarios:
(a) I join an MC like say MBB/LEK/ATK (maybe Big 4) too; OR
(b) I join the Infrastructure Advisory division of an engineering consultancy (e.g AECOM, Advisian) and try to make the switch there.
Is it possible? I heard that REPE isn't nearly as cookie cutter as vanilla PE but want to get a real perspective.
I'm based in Australia but happy to hear experiences in the US...UK...wherever really.

It might be a bit of a difficult jump to make without going to grad school or something. You'd be lacking deal-level experience or even real estate experience. If I was the hiring manager looking at your resume I'd be seriously questioning why you want to be in real estate.
If you have the background for MBB I don't see why you couldn't convince a real estate investment/advisory firm to hire your right out of the gate. Otherwise I would focus on Big4 real estate focused groups.

Not sure what kind of shot you'd have at a Blackstone or Starwood, but you should certainly be able to land an analyst role at any other REPE shop. Start networking, talking to recruiters, and applying to jobs on select leaders. Learn ARGUS first and start reading up on what's going on in the CRE world. Expect to take an initial pay cut unless you break into one of the MF. It's really not that tough of a sell as long as you are genuinely interested and have a good personality. If REPE is what you want, I wouldn't go to traditional PE first.
I would have thought the opposite actually that your chances may be higher at a very finance oriented/large structure firm as opposed to smaller guys who take a more asset level approach. BX take plenty of guys with 0 re experience but come from baking so don't see it as a big hindrance as long as you know what your talking about and can model.

From job posts I've seen, you'll have to start as an Analyst in underwriting or something for like $70k/year before you'll get hired in REPE. I think it's tough to break in if you haven't done RE IBD first.

I am having a bit of trouble making a step in my career. I have read up on quite a few discussions of the same sort but none helped me due to my location.
I am currently working at Jones Lang LaSalle Dubai. I will complete my graduate program on the last day of August this year. I worked on a major IPO, valuating 6 major assets and writing RICS compliant reports. I also worked on many advisory reports on major developments.
The thing is, I am not sure if I will get a full time job in the strategic consulting department since it relies on availability. Also, it’s not my goal to stay in consulting. I want to find a job in real estate private equity. Its proving to be harder than I thought.
My profile is not ideal. I graduated from the leading university in the middle east, the American University of Beirut, but that's not saying much compared to top tier universities in the U.S and Europe. The only thing I have going for me is my experience in JLL and the fact that I am studying to be a CFA charter holder.
I don't mind getting an entry level job, but I am not finding any. Well-known companies that offer real estate private equity don't recruit to their Dubai offices. I'm a little hesitant about local companies. I think if I stay in a multinational company it would do me good when I want to move back to London.
Am I missing something? Are there good companies that I can apply to in Dubai? Should I go for local companies? Or is my best bet to look for a real estate consulting job in a competing company in case JLL tell me I have to go to a department that is irrelevant to my mid-term goals?

There are plenty of American University of Beirut alumni in Dubai. Start contacting them on LinkedIn, especially the ones who are working in real estate PE.
I'm not really into Real Estate but can't help you out much in that aspect. Sorry. I've heard Colliers is big in Dubai, I'm not sure if it's Real Estate Private Equity though.
