Overview of RE, IB, AM, and PE

Hi all,

I'm currently a junior lawyer in Canadian big law, specializing in real estate acquisitions, development, and leasing. Lately, I've been thinking about a career switch. I've been been looking at applying to analyst/associate positions in real estate investment (e.g., investment analyst positions at a real estate private equity shop, my province's real estate investment management fund, and Colliers). However, I've also been pondering going back to school to obtain an MBA and trying to find a position in asset management (focused on equities), investment banking, or private equity (a long-shot) instead.

Pardon my ignorance, as most of my industry knowledge is centred on law, but can somebody please give me a quick, high-level overview of the career and salary progression in those 4 fields (RE, AM, IB, and PE), as well as why you chose to pursue a career in RE.

NOTE: any responses that don't include BOTH the career AND salary progression for ALL 4 FIELDS as well as REASON for choosing RE will be deleted
