One Resume for ATS System & One "Regularly" formatted resume

I've been applying a lot recently to a variety of BBs and after doing some research on their screening process/ATS systems to quickly rule-out/select resumes for a human-being in HR to actually read, I've seen a lot of articles about calibrating resumes to maximize it's impact on the ATS system.

My question is, how do you go about using two different resumes to apply online? Here's the way I understand it but I wanted to sanity-check that...

1) Upload the ATS-formatted resume to populate the job application fields and that data is what's ultimately reviewed by the ATS system for specific keywords, phrases, frequency of those keywords...
2) Upload the regularly-formatted resume in the event your app gets past the ATS system and goes to HR for human review so they have a 'human-friendly' version to read.

During one of the screens in the application process, there's an opportunity to upload additional files for the application and check off "Relevant" (see attached image)

So if I upload my ATS-friendly resume to populate the app which in turn is reviewed by the automated system, then upload my regular resume in PDF format for example and check off the "Relevant" checkbox, I'm assuming the human-reader will reference the PDF format instead of the plain text (*.txt) ATS-version?

Heard a lot of contradictory information on this; can anyone with direct experience weigh in?
