BSc Acc and Finance at LSE vs BSc Econ and Finance at Bocconi
I am a high school student with 2 UG offers. One is Accounting and Finance at LSE and the other one is Econ and Finance at Bocconi. I know LSE has a better global and regional reputation but I am not enthusiastic about becoming an accountant. The BSc in Finance at LSE required me a nearly perfect grade in my country's baccalaureate (Eastern Europe) which is very risky as the examinations are very subjective(in my first mock exam I had a mean average of 9.8/10 and in my second examination my grades dropped to 9.17/10) so that is why I have applied for accounting and finance.
My academic interests lean towards economics, finance, and advanced mathematics, aligning more closely with Bocconi's curriculum. However, I'm hesitant about missing out on the opportunity to study in London, especially at Europe's best target school. Also, I am concerned about the so-called "cut-throat" culture and poor social life at LSE.
Career-wise, I am still not sure if I want to go down the IB path or the consulting path, but the perfect scenario would be landing a job on the buy side with a favorable work-life balance or even in corporate finance.
Considering these factors, along with Bocconi's lower costs, which program would better position me for my career goals and academic interests? Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Choosing between LSE's BSc in Accounting and Finance and Bocconi's BSc in Economics and Finance is indeed a significant decision that can influence your future career path and academic satisfaction. Both institutions are highly prestigious and offer pathways to successful careers in finance, consulting, and beyond. Here's a breakdown to help you weigh your options more effectively:
Curriculum and Academic Interests: If your academic interests strongly lean towards economics, finance, and advanced mathematics, Bocconi's curriculum seems to align more closely with your preferences. Bocconi is renowned for its strong focus on these subjects and offers a comprehensive education that is well-respected globally, especially in Europe.
Global and Regional Reputation: LSE holds a formidable global and regional reputation, particularly in finance and economics. This reputation can be a significant advantage when seeking employment, especially in highly competitive fields like investment banking and consulting. However, Bocconi also enjoys a strong reputation, particularly in Europe, and its graduates are highly sought after by employers.
Career Aspirations: Both programs can pave the way to a career in investment banking, consulting, or corporate finance. LSE's location in London provides proximity to major financial institutions and consulting firms, potentially offering more networking opportunities and internships. However, Bocconi has a strong network and reputation, especially in Europe, and can also provide a solid foundation for a career in your areas of interest.
Culture and Social Life: Concerns about the "cut-throat" culture and social life at LSE are valid considerations. University life is not solely about academics; it's also about personal growth and enjoyment. If you feel that Bocconi's environment might be more conducive to a balanced university experience, this is an important factor to consider.
Financial Considerations: The lower costs associated with studying at Bocconi could also be a significant advantage, allowing you to potentially save resources for future educational opportunities or investments.
In conclusion, both programs offer excellent opportunities, but based on your academic interests, concerns about culture, and financial considerations, Bocconi's BSc in Economics and Finance might be more aligned with your current preferences and goals. Remember, success in your career will also depend on your personal efforts, internships, networking, and how you leverage the opportunities provided by your chosen institution.

studying accounting & finance doesn't mean you will be an accountant, most people are targeting the same jobs as the BSc Econ and BSc finance cohorts
do employers perceive all these degrees the same? what is more important from their perspective: school reputation or the degree you acquired?
