Canadian High School Senior Needing Career Advice- Schulich Or Ivey?
So straight to the point, Im a high school senior in Toronto, Canada who wants to become an investment banker. I realized this in February, so I didn't have the chance to apply for Ivey, & the general consensus seems to be that Ivey is the best school for IB within Canada.
I did apply to Schulich however, and was accepted, Schulich isn't a bad school by any means but Ivey is in another league compared to it. So my two options here are accept schulichs offer, work my ass off and if all goes to plan transfer to Ivey after 2 years. The other option is to take another year of highschool and apply to Ivey then. My friends say not to do another year of high school and that it makes me look like a dumbass, but as long as it helps me in the future I couldn't care less. I honestly don't know what to do, if you were in my situation what would you do?
Thank you, and stay safe!
Ivey or bust. Aight?
Don’t do another year of high school.
The Canadian banking industry is becoming more open to “non-target schools”, as long as you do the right things like joining the student fund, or programs like Bridge to Capital Markets (a mentorship program offered to non-target schools - google it). Keep your GPA as high as possible, network with alumni, and in my personal opinion pursue something significant outside of finance that you can add to your resume and pitch in your interviews (for me that was a university varsity sport and running a business) in order to keep your chances high.
You can take this with confidence from someone who is a current IB intern at a top 6 Canadian Bank from the MOST non-target university you can imagine.
