Fistfight
I got into a fistfight sophomore year of undergrad. I was written up for disorderly conduct and my record only claims I was involved in an altercation without even mentioning the savage beating I provided a fellow classmate. I was told that if a grad school looked into it, they would only get to see that it was an altercation, and there was no mention of fighting or alcohol in the writeup, which was very lenient. I was on disciplinary probation though for 2 months.
How will this look for business school? I have top 7 quality statistics, just a little Irish in me.
Some schools explicitly ask if you have been expelled or suspended. I know that for a fact. I’m not sure if they ask whether you’ve been placed on academic/disciplinary probation.
I doubt it is a deal breaker. I too had a violence related disciplinary action in ug. You won’t know whether they will ask that question until you are halfway thru the application (but before you pay the application fee)
All else equal, I would prefer to apply to schools that do not ask that question.
Is it a part of your transcript? If it's not, I don't see how a business school would know that you were written up. I'm fairly certain b-school apps ask whether you've ever been convicted of a felony, but I don't think you'd be prompted to provide info on your fight otherwise.
If you need to disclose it, you'll need to put it in terms of what you learned from the incident. It will have been a number of years in the past, so I don't think they'll give it much attention if you position it as a mistake to have allowed yourself to get into an alteracation and that it has been a good lesson in how to manage difficult situations more effectively. If your recommendations hint at the Irish in you coming out, however, this fistfight will hurt you as the admissions officers will perhaps correctly assume that you're not mature enough to manage your emotions. There's no excuse to get into a fistfight or even a shouting match with someone in a professional setting. That will always hurt you.
