Full-Ride at Nontarget or Full Price at Target?

Hi everyone, basically the title. I received a full-ride scholarship to an extreme non-target in the midwest (no-name school with zero alumni in IB), and I also received a preadmittance into Ross at Umich but with no financial aid (in-state resident). Very interested in pursuing IB and I know Ross has a strong alumni network, but I'm really struggling the justification of incurring $150k+ in student loans at 18 years old. Thoughts?

I was in a very similar position. I chose the scholarship over the prestige and now I'll be interning at a MM bank this summer. There is always a way to break into IB, but you'll have to network your butt off and just might have to settle for less than EB/BB. But if you are deadset on IB (and I mean deadset), then Ross is the way to go. They always seem to place students at top firms and not just for IB.

As someone who went to a no-name state university on a full-ride, go to one with the better resources, and you have in-state so that is a good factor.

Better to break in early than having to do MFin at a higher cost later on.

I went to an extreme non-target and cannot more recommend you go to the target. I fortunately got a great BB offer, but I have so so many friends that are just as qualified, if not more, that ended up with nothing. My analyst class is great, but some of my non-target classmates deserve to be there and aren't.

Breaking in from a non-target is not only a fuck ton of work, but also a lot of luck. Some people just don't have both, and don't place.

If you are in state at UMich, how are you expecting 150k debt? In state tuition is ~17k and room and board is ~13k. That's 30k/yr *4 = 120k assuming you don't pay anything.

Is there a way you can work over the summers? Assuming you bring in 2,500/semester and 5k/summer, that's 10k/year. Especially if you get a big time IB internship, you can probably bring in $10k post tax during the summer.

Move off campus to save on rent?

Go part time senior year/graduate a semester early? Chop off a semester and that knocks off 15k.

While you'll still be in a lot of debt, it may not be as much as you think.

Overall it all depends on your risk tolerance. But if this midwest school is truly no-name and 0 IB alum, the long-term play might be Ross.
