Germany Education help!
Hi peeps,
I need your advice in choosing a suitable course of study in Germany. I have a bachelors in dentistry and however i have ever since not pursued that field of study and moved on to complete a PG dip with a finance specialization from India. I was working for equity research for about 4yrs before taking a break for a couple of years. Now I wish to further my education and study an internationally accredited degree from Germany. I did look at a couple to websites and I understand that WHU, ESB, Mannheim, Goethe, koln are the top tier universities in germany. However I prefer to study at a public university that has no fees (or minimal fees). I have not given my GMAT yet and was wondering if any universities offer masters without GMAT. Also since I would like to work there after my studies, I would like to see if these institutes offer placement assistance as well? I understand that German language is pre requisite and hence I would enroll myself in language training as well. I am not really keen on working only in ER, but still would like to be associated with the Finance field itself.

Mannheim, Frankfurt (Goethe), LMU Munich, Cologne and a few others are the top universities in Germany. However, both Mannheim and LMU require a GMAT of more than 600, otherwise they won't look at your application. Frankfurt has a pretty reputable "Money and Finance" MSc which also requires a GMAT. However, they have a regular business MSc as well which still takes the GMAT into account but admission is possible without it since it only accounts for 10% of your profile evaluation. I'm not sure about Cologne, you got to look it up yourself.
However, all these Master's degrees are regular "Business Administration" degree which will allow you to concentrate on f.e. Finance, Marketing, etc., but not "pure-play" Master's such as MSc Finance at LSE / HEC / etc.

And yeah as you mentioned Geothe has a regular MSc with specialization in finance possible. But I just missed their deadline. Would the normal Msc also have an equal acceptance in the job market there?
Does any one have any reviews or feedback about the MBA at Georg Simon Ohm Nuremberg University?
Most employers have no idea what an MBA is and Msc IS the degree that gets you employed.
Also most public universities have a standardized admission procedure so highly probable that they will turn you down because of your non-business/finance undergrad (not sure how credits your diploma had) even though you spent 4 years in ER role.
Others might have a differing opinion but in Germany it doesn't really matter much where you graduated from unless it's WHU/EBS/Mannheim which give you a bit of leg up for entry into certain careers but otherwise if you have financial constrains you can consider something like attending part-time Msc Finance at Frankfurt School while working
I study at the University of Cologne and I would highly advise you to not go to a "public" school in Germany as an international... since money is always tight the career service is non existing and it is very tough for non german natives to get any kind of job out of the masters programm... If you are locked on Germany I think WHU and HHL (google it) would be your best bet but you will need a GMAT ( as for all other masters in the "Top Tier" ) and I am pretty sure all deadlines are over by months now... As masters at public universitys are free everyone applies and attends for the heck of it and they are highly competitive. There are degree requirements such as 20 ECTS credits in economics 20 in statistics/Math etc so you would have to have a pretty specific bachelor degree. I don´t know why you are locked in on studing in Germany (although it is a great country and the education is very good) because your situation sounds more like a msc Finance somewhere in the UK or so "kind a deal" (since they often dont care about your bachelor as long as you have one and it isnt awful) If you have any further question about the University of Cologne or the german education system just write me a PM and I´ll be happy to help!
Thanks for your reply fours and zewa, I have close above 40 credits in Finance and accounts and 14 credits in economics in my PG Dip. The reason I choose German is the tuition free education and the post study work Visa for 1yr. I also understand that the job market is pretty robust there (with language skills), hence I locked up German for my masters/Msc there. I have also heard that the smaller universities in Germany (apart from the big names) have close tie ups with a small number of companies and will do their best to place students there. Any one knowing any such unis?
Overall you also shouldn't discount the factor that you just might not like Germany and might want to move to another European country after graduation in which case the unknown university with connections to small companies won't help at all.
Well as fours says after the top tier ( which is not far above the rest) every other university is about on par with each other so you can just pick a city you would enjoy and try to get into a masters programm there. Once again most universities wont consider your application though as you usually have to have around 120 (3/4 of the degree) credits in business/economics and usually some statistics and math credits.
Well my PG Dip is completely focused on management with more than 3/4th in Business. The 40 credits I mentioned were in Finance alone. Also do I still get the post study Visa of 1yr for job search after completing my masters and would that be valid across Europe or limited to Germany alone?
