HEC MIF but no formal exp?

Hi guys,

I've been admitted to HEC MIF programme (1 year) but I don't have any internships except making my own company at 17/doing kinda strange freelance finance-related work (not in markets per se).

I'm wondering how difficult it may be to get a summer analyst position in IB London with my weak background, should I instead go for the ESSEC 2 year programme which offers me multiple internship opportunities?

I'm an EU National (Greek), if that matters.

Thanks!

You could try and ask if a switch to the HEC MiM is possible? In the second year of the MiM you can choose the International Finance track, which is basically the MIF. So more time and broader expertise for I think like 15k€ more.

I can't change to the MiM programme, and tbh i'm not too into management either. Maybe I could ask to do the two year track instead, would that be wise in your opinion?

Congratulations on the offer!

However, you are right - it would be a bit tough to recruit without relevant prior experience. I experienced something similar and the issue is that you get very few interviews and can't afford to screw up. But you tend to screw up more because you have less chance to practice. Catch-22.

if possible, delay or try to turn it into a 2 year programme so you can recruit twice. Networking will be extremely important in landing interviews so I'd prioritise that heavily too.

Regardless of when you do it, you should try to do some IB/PE internship before the programme starts. whether it's paid or unpaid doesn't matter. it would help you a lot.

It's still worth doing because you'll meet great people and learn a lot. The master's will open a ton of doors for you even if it's not obvious at the beginning. Good luck!
