Incoming masters - taking summer off

Hello,

Does anyone have experience of commencing a <2 yrs masters in finance without doing a summer internship the summer before?

I am from the Nordics and  have been accepted to a top tier MSc in Finance (LSE/HEC/LBS). Currently, I have no internship secured for the summer, but might be able to land one (regional firm). However, I would really enjoy taking the summer off, travelling. Do you believe not working this summer would sincerely affect my prospects for FT offers afterwards? My hope is to land FT in the UK or somewhere else abroad in Europe.

I have 2 relevant regional internships prior to this, one this spring.

Thanks!

Hey, 2020 London grad currently interning in an EB IB and interned at a BB ST in summer 2020 after my 1 year masters

It all depends whether you only want to secure FT upon graduation or you wouldn’t mind doing a summer/off-cycle after and join FT in summer 2022 - personally I knew I didn’t have enough on paper to get through screening when compared against others who had relevant summers and wanted to upgrade/got rejected. If that’s you then get whatever experience to beef up your CV. If not, then take the summer off and enjoy it.

My advice in general would be to do the internship and still apply for internship in August - it might seem silly to keep doing internships but you have to play your odds right and only you know how competitive you are on paper. A ‘prestige’ london internship opens doors for you to stay in London whether or not you convert.

Hope it helps!

Thanks a lot for the input!

Seems like interning post master is a lot more common than I thought, my impression was that most went for FT

Unless you're volunteering or doing something productive while travelling, I would do an internship.

You'll be competing against people at your school that did an internship, you don't want to hurt your chances before you even begin.
