MBA Chances

Hi All,

Hope everyone is well. I am getting to the point in my career where I want to make a change and head in a different direction. I am currently assessing different business schools and wanted to list my "stats" and hear what people think. Goal is to transition to MBB/Tier 2 consulting (want to be in the Texas area after school, but could see myself moving back to the New England area after 3-5 years). I realize some of these schools are stretches, but I would appreciate any feedback!

GPA: 3.54 (non-target state university in New England)

GMAT: Based on practice tests, assume around 720

Work: Private Banking at a top BB firm (think Goldman, JPM) working with UHNW individuals (3 years as an analyst, 2 years as an associate)

EC: President of fraternity (undergrad), mentoring for financial literacy in underserved communities, local B&G club member, volunteer at local food bank

Good reference letters from current superiors at the firm as well as outside the firm

White male

My target list of schools are UT Austin, Duke, UNC, Harvard, Dartmouth, Northwestern

Thanks for your help, this forum helped me tons years ago when I was trying to crack into Private Banking so hoping for a similar result here!

Looks good to me. I’ve seen people with significantly less get into UNC. Just network and work on your “story” so that you crush the interviews.

By state university in New England, I'm assuming a flagship school like UConn, UMass Amherst, UNH, URI, Vermont, Maine, etc. With a 720 GMAT, UNC and UT Austin are programs that you should be in pretty good shape for. If you can craft a good story, you could be competitive for Fuqua and Tuck (Duke and Dartmouth). Kellogg would be a bit of a reach and Harvard would realistically be a long shot (it is for most people). A higher GMAT (740+) could boost your chances at some of the more competitive places.

A few other programs to consider: Stern (NYU), Johnson (Cornell), Ross (Michigan), Darden (Virginia)
