MSc in Canada or Europe

Hi,

I'm graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from my European university in summer. In my country it is common to do a Masters degree right after the Bachelors in order to find a well paid job. As a result, an MBA degree is probably not the best choice for me.

I'm interested in consulting (esp. strategy consulting) and international management. Personally I would love to work in North America (US or Canada). Therefore I was looking into the Ivey MSc program (maybe the CEMS double degree) at UWO. However, since an MSc in North America is pretty uncommon, I'm not sure about how easy it will be to find a well paid job after graduation. Additionally I would have to improve my second foreign language in order to fulfill the CEMS requirement if I decided for the CEMS track. Another school in Canada offering a Master in International Business would be Queen's...

Alternatively I have a decent chance of getting into one of these European top business-schools for the Master in Management (MSc) degree:
-LSE
-London Business School
-HSG St. Gallen
-WHU Otto Beisheim

I could need advice here. Do you think it is a good idea to apply to Ivey and pass on the European schools? Thanks for your help!

Check some U.S. MSc's too (Duke and Michigan have those).

You can also apply to LSE MSc in International Management, which offers 1 semester at a top US Business School.

On the same page, you can go to HEC and get a double degree with MIT Sloan, or an exchange at other US BS.

Hi! Most of the people on this forum have advised people who want to work in North America and come from Europe to start off in Europe and try to get transferred. At least this is definitely the case with the US. Canada, I'm not too sure about, so I hope someone else can help on this one.

Which country are you from? Your name is basketballfan, so I guess you are not a Brit. Probably from the CEE? This is important as it would largely decide where it is easiest for you to get a foot in the door in Europe. If you see yourself in an English speaking environment, then there is nothing in Europe that beats London. I am more sure of the MSF programs in Europe but if you want to do a MSc in Business and land in London later on, then probably LSE/LBS (MiM there doesn't need experience, right?)/Imperial/Warwick and of course Oxbridge (don't know if they have MiM programs or anything similar) would be your best bets in the UK. From the continent to get to London, I'd say HEC Paris and Bocconi could help, but as I said, I don't know it that well for management consulting. St Gallen and WHU are a little problematic for London as they place well for the German speaking countries but less to London, so I'd advise you to prefer something else if London is your goal. Also, if you don't have previous internships, it might be smart to pick a two year course, so you could do an internship after the first year.

Oh, and about your interests. I understand strategy (management) consulting but what does international business refer to? Like a grad scheme in a FTSE100 company or smth? I'd prefer management consulting and focus on that. There was a great thread about it that is still active and on the front page. Take a look at that.

I understand that you are applying for next year already. TOP schools deadlines are closing in, so be quick about it. I hope you did your GMAT already and TOEFL (if you need it). If you don't have a good GMAT, its gonna be difficult to make it next year.

I'm from Austria, so I am from a German speaking country. If I do my Master in Canada I'd be able to obtain a 16 month work permit and if I find a company I can probably stay even longer.

I'm planning to take a year off and do internships (maybe 2x6-months). Ill take the GMAT in summer, so I'll have a lot of time to study for it. I'm planning to start my Master's degree in fall '15.

Thank you. I feel like the MSc at Ivey would be a great chance to find a job and stay in Canada for at least a couple of years after graduation. I'm still curious if anybody knows how the MSc holds up to against MBAs in Canada (or North America in general)? Will employers prefer candidates with an MBA over candidates that hold an MSc in Management?
