Recruiting from Tulane

Hello everyone,

I will be attending Tulane in the fall and am wondering, assuming decent internship experience and club involvement, if a finance major would be completely necessary for recruiting.

I see a lot of firms saying they are open to philosophy majors and things of the like, and am wondering if that would still apply at Tulane considering it is a non-target.

If anyone has any info or advice I’d really appreciate it.

Hey there, future Green Wave!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for students from non-target schools like Tulane to wonder about the necessity of a finance major when it comes to recruiting. Here's the scoop:

  • Major Flexibility: While finance is a very career-oriented major, it's not the only path into financial services. Firms often appreciate a diverse educational background, including majors like philosophy, as long as you have the necessary skills and understanding of financial concepts.

  • Skill Development: Regardless of your major, it's crucial to develop a strong foundation in finance and accounting. This could be through elective courses or self-study. It's all about being able to handle technical interviews with ease.

  • Networking and Clubs: Involvement in relevant clubs and securing internships are key. They can compensate for not being a finance major by showing your interest and commitment to the field.

  • Real-World Experience: The story from the WSO thread about the Division 1 College Football Player from Tulane who didn't have a traditional internship but started and sold a business while in school is a testament to the value of practical experience.

  • Alumni Connections: Don't underestimate the power of the Tulane network. Reach out to alumni, as they are often willing to help fellow graduates, especially those showing initiative and drive.

In short, while being a finance major can give you a direct line to financial services, it's not the only route. Your passion, experience, and the relationships you build can also open doors. Keep your grades up, get involved, and network like a pro. Remember, it's not just what you know, but who you know and how you leverage your unique experiences.

Good luck at Tulane, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need more bananas—I mean, advice!
